It's here! The first day of the Think Christmas Blog Hop! And I have the honor and pleasure of being amongst the first on our journey...
Christmas in July! Welcome to my day for the Think Christmas Blog Hop!
Many thanks to Mdm Samm and Lesley of the Cuddle Quilter for organizing this and allowing me a spot!!
I decided to use my go-to pattern book from Barbara Brackman...
I've had this book about as long as I've been quilting and consider it one of my best references when looking for block inspiration.
My little engineer head loves the way she organizes everything!! You can find a copy on Amazon but even used, it's salty...my copy was published in 1993.
Barbara has a blog where she references it being out of print but no timeline as to another printing or going digital...
Anyway, I wanted to do something Nine- Patchy, so I looked under the heading of Equal Nine Patch and picked this block...#1689a
This block has been called many things according to the reference book starting in 1894, but in 1936 Nancy Cabot called it Three and Six. This seems a good descriptive name since there are 3 whole squares and 6 HST's in this block.
I really like it done up in Moda's French General. The off-white Poinsettia print as well as the red print are from their Fa-la-la-la-la line.
To make one of these for yourself you would need to cut:
3 Light Squares 4 7/8"
3 Dark Squares 4 7/8"
3 Light Squares 4 1/2"
This will yield one 12 1/2" block.
You will put right sides together of the three dark/light 4 7/8" pairs, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the light square and sew 1/4" from each side of the line.
Next, cut apart the 6 HST on the drawn line and press toward the dark triangle. Then you can trim the HST's to 4 1/2" and arrange them with the remaining 4 1/2" light squares as shown below...
Sew in rows and then join to form this simple but beautiful 12 1/2" block.
French General Fa-La-La-La-La
Now, you could make 4 blocks and you would end up with this pretty topper above...
Or you can do what I did and make 20 blocks to make this quilt top below. I also put on a 4 1/2" border out of the light fabric to finish this top. I apologize for the lack of pretty scenery in these pictures! The drought around here has really taken a toll on my landscaping...the soybeans are still green but they are the only thing green, at this point!

Haha, I figured I better take a picture of the top with some Indiana sweet corn in the backdrop...since this is "Christmas in July"...
I pinned the top to my husband's mighty "rhino enclosure" capable of keeping our garden free of bunnies, raccoons, and deer. I call it that because he used cut off telephone poles as fence posts...and it's, eh...kind of "sturdy", lol!
Now, for the giveaway...I have a Kate Spain Flurry charm pack to give to a lucky comment maker. Please make a comment on which block above you prefer, just for my curiosity ;) or tell me your favorite Christmas Carol.
I love this fabric collection, Flurry, as well as her other two Christmas lines, they are all such happy collections! In order to be entered in the giveaway I ask that you not be a no-reply blogger or have a way for me to contact you if you win...otherwise I will draw another.
You do not need to be a follower to win this giveaway but if I can get to 100 followers, I will have another giveaway on a separate post just for my wonderful followers so stay tuned...we are getting close!
Good luck in the giveaway and be sure to visit these other wonderful sites that I have the pleasure of joining with today! **edited to add...I will draw on August 5**** thanks!
And, don't forget this hop goes on for 7 days, visit Lesley for the master schedule!

Great French General! Love them all. Thanks for sharing...Judith, Texas
I love the red and white you made the quilt top with the best.. of the other three I would say the green holly. Good post. thanks for sharing
These are my favourites:
My favourites are three Australian carols. They are Carols of the Birds, Three Drovers and Christmas Day. Here is a site with the words: http://heathhill.blogspot.com/2005/12/australian-christmas-carols.html
I love your blocks too but my favourite is: Blue, green, red snowmen
I definitely need that book of quilt blocks!! Your block is simple yet very versatile for different fabrics. I love HS's and your Quilt is just lovely!! I do feel your pain with the *brown grass*. Up until a week ago I had brown grass too but God showered us with a week of rain!!! Oh Blessed rain! I do love your quilts and the fact you live by a soybean field just like me!! I also have a corn field across the road in front. Oh, dearest me, I will have to say my favorite Christmas Song is White Christmas and favorite carol would be Joy to the World!
Blessings
Gmama Jane
WOW, I just listened to the acapella choir and had to respond!! Fantastic and Oh so Funny!!!!!! Thanks for sharing that!!
Gmama
Oooh they are all lovely and your finished quilt is gorgeous - I think my favourite is the four block quilt and my favourite christmas carol is Silent Night.
I loved that music--totally got me in the mood to Think Christmas! The red and white quilt is just beautiful as are your blocks. I already follow you and love doing so. ;O)
Looking good. I think the block of yours that I love the most is the one with the blue triangle. Very striking - it would look awesome stitched into a quilt.
My favourite carol is the Australian Jingle Bells (it is hard singing about snow in the middle of summer)
I have Barbara's book too - a real must for a quilter's library. Love how you went from a block, to mini, to quilt - just so striking and inspiraional. My favorite Christmas song - not a carol - Ave Maria - I cry every time I hear it!
Oh I just love the block in red and white but the green and white is pretty also. Favorite song would be Chestnuts roasting on an open fire....thanks for being a part of my Christmas...
I really like your quilt. I love red and white quilts. My favorite block is the green with the busy background, it has more interest for me. I have Barbara's book too and use it all the time. I don't know that I have a favorite as I like them all.
Hi Kris, I love all the blocks, but red and white always look fantastic. My favourite Christmas Carol is Oh Come All Ye Faithful and love being able to sing this at Christmas. Thanks for sharing. Susie x
Beautiful quilt. When I was a child I loved Drummer Boy, then I liked The Twelve Days of Christmas but now, I really love Amy Grant's Emmanuel.
OOP's for got my favorite song, actually my GK's. They sing it to me every Christmas. Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer, They think it is funny! I prefer The First Noel.
The red and white is beautiful! I always love Silent Night - Frank Sinatra version.
Love your blocks, topper and quilt made of those gorgeous fabrics. And so nice to see the extras you made from the other fabrics! I really hope you get the rain you need...what a summer you are having! The icing on the cake was the choir...amazing...wouldn't it have been fun to be in the audience that night! You have a wonderful giveaway and a great post to get us started on day one of the hop!
I love the four blocks together. Your blocks and quilt are lovely. Thanks for sharing.
Great blocks and a really sweet quilt. That block looks so different when sewn up in a quilt. I use clothespin for all kinds of things, too.:)
My favorite of the three blocks is the one with the holly print. I am a big fan of Kate Spain Christmas prints, thanks for the chance to win!
Thanks for the block tutorial. I like the one with the holly fabric & dotted background the best. Thanks for the chance to win. (I'm a follower by email.)
MMM, I like dots, I like both snowmen especially the one on white however they would be too much for even a tabletopper. So the poinsettia with solid red is the winner - can't beat French General.
Unless it is Kate Spain - thank you for the giveaway.
Loving it! Looks like a fun block to piece. I like the first block. Green is my favorite color and I love birds!! Thanks for the give-away!
I love that you made your block into a complete top for us to see. I'm quite visual and have difficulty imagining what a block would look like as an entire top. The third block with the red and white is my favorite!
Hi

Thanks for the lovely Christmas inspiration and for the chance to win a Christmas charm pack. I really love everything Kate Spain and sewed with Flurry a lot last Christmas.
My favorite carol? That's a hard one. I love Christmas carols. Maybe my favorite is Silent Night. I love it when it is sung in harmony a capella.
And my favorite of your blocks? The French General one. Lovely quilt BTW.
Thanks for sharing. And Merry Christmas (in August!)
I'm bookmarking that block; love it! I'd love to win the Flurry pack! (Forgot to add my favorite carol...Once in Royal David's City.)
Love your quilt and I am a follower.Thank-you for the give away. Becky

Love your blocks. Thanks for sharing.
Nice tutorial! Merry christmas
Thank you for sharing the tutorial. This is a very versatile block. I like the way you showed the block and then progressed to a mini and finally a full sized quilt. My favorite block is the one made with the red and white French General fabrics the best. Oh Holy Night is my favorite Christmas carol.
