I chose to make my picnic blanket using one of my all-time favorite blocks...churndash! And, as this last winter has been very long and snowy, I thought I needed to work in a bright color for this project. This is made using Kona School Bus and Kona White. The mini blocks finish at 6 inches and the big ones are 24 inches.
I decided to have our picnic at our place as we have acreage and plenty of space to spread out! My favorite peonies are in full bloom along with some beautiful poppies...
I put Hubs in charge of the grilled salmon and he performed perfectly. We grill a large portion in order to enjoy leftovers on salad the next day...yum!
I hate to share our recipe because our Costco has stopped selling the dressing we use for marinade and I have come up empty handed so far at sourcing it elsewhere but if you all are lucky enough to find it(and let me know if you do!!)...this is what the bottle looks like and it is wonderful as a marinade for the salmon or just as a dressing on a simple green salad...
I do not have the good fortune of owning one of the sweet Peterboro baskets from our Hop sponsor (oh my, this is my favorite of theirs) but I do have this green handwoven one I purchased many years ago which has provided many years of faithful service.
Or maybe you prefer strawberry rhubarb?

ReplyDeleteKris the churn dash is one of my very favorite patterns; it so reminds me of my mother who loved making that one. I'm not a huge fan of salmon and am constantly trying to find a way to fix it that I would like it so if you find that marinade again please share your source - I'd love to try it! And I'm coming right over for a piece of pie. :) blessings, marlene

I love your picnic quilt! Funny that the bees love it, too. Is it the color or the food, I wonder. Every time we put yummy food, especially fruit, out on our backyard table the bees find us. Your flowers are beautiful and your food and pies look delicious. I am tempted to want a piece of each. Both of these pies look picture perfect to me. I have never tried this dressing. Now I am going to be looking for it, too. My hubby loves salmon. Thanks for sharing your picnic ... :) Pat

The color does remind me off bees and the bees like it? I didn't know bees would be attracted to their own color, but it makes sense. Great post, Kris.

ReplyDeleteKris, I am in love, love, love!......with your quilt, with orange, with rhubarb (even if it is with strawberries) pie AND with those orange stars...oh, and your flowers are gorgeous! I would imagine those pies look so pretty dished up, sitting on your beautiful quilt. Orange is my newest favorite color. I think I've purchased 10 half yard pieces this month!

ReplyDeleteI'm loving that school bus color. In civil war quilts it is called cheddar. It's a color not used often and can't figure out why. Your quilt is nice and bright and perfect for a picnic. The mini blocks are sweet. Speaking of sweet.... I have to stop now and fix dinner so I can have a slice of leftover pie. Your pies look scrumptious!

ReplyDeleteI can almost smell the perfume of those peonies. We don't have them down in Alabama that I know of so they must not be native to the state or good in our red clay soil. The quilt is wonderful! Sort of matches the salmon and the poppies. The marinade sounds good too so I hope you find a source for it---or maybe locate a similar recipe that you can make up yourself?? If I were there I think I would have to have a bite of both pies--just a taste. Peach pies I can do but we don't have rhubarb down here either and being from the North, I really miss it!

ReplyDeleteThe bees were enjoying our Cola on our picnic, we got lucky as well, no stings. :) We don't make much fish, but I'll have to keep an eye out for a similar dressing like you used since my husband really enjoys fish. Thanks for sharing your ideas!

I wanted to tell you I went to Safeway and found a Sweet Citrus Herb dressing (Safeway Select brand) and my husband used it on both chicken and some Swai fish fillets and said it was delightful! (Honestly his words lol) So thank you for the inspiration to use such a product in such a way, and maybe it can be a decent substitute for your marinade!
