I chose to make my picnic blanket using one of my all-time favorite blocks...churndash! And, as this last winter has been very long and snowy, I thought I needed to work in a bright color for this project. This is made using Kona School Bus and Kona White. The mini blocks finish at 6 inches and the big ones are 24 inches.
I may have made a slight error though as our bees seem to enjoy it as much as I do...hmmm...no stings yet, lol!!
I chose to minimally quilt with straight lines using an Aurifil white 50 thread.
I decided to have our picnic at our place as we have acreage and plenty of space to spread out! My favorite peonies are in full bloom along with some beautiful poppies...
I put Hubs in charge of the grilled salmon and he performed perfectly. We grill a large portion in order to enjoy leftovers on salad the next day...yum!
I hate to share our recipe because our Costco has stopped selling the dressing we use for marinade and I have come up empty handed so far at sourcing it elsewhere but if you all are lucky enough to find it(and let me know if you do!!)...this is what the bottle looks like and it is wonderful as a marinade for the salmon or just as a dressing on a simple green salad...
We also had some yummy fruit to go with our meal along with the simple green salad mentioned above...
I do not have the good fortune of owning one of the sweet Peterboro baskets from our Hop sponsor (oh my, this is my favorite of theirs) but I do have this green handwoven one I purchased many years ago which has provided many years of faithful service.
We had peach pie for dessert...my favorite!! I am not a pretty pie baker...no pinterest shots here... but oh, I promise, it's yummy...so good!
Or maybe you prefer strawberry rhubarb?
Please be sure to stop by and visit the others who share this day with me!!

ReplyDeleteLovely quilt ...great post
ReplyDeleteGreat quilt! I love churndash too and it looks great in the sunny fabric. Love the photos...the flowers and the food.... and they are all "Pinterest worthy!"
ReplyDeleteKris the churn dash is one of my very favorite patterns; it so reminds me of my mother who loved making that one. I'm not a huge fan of salmon and am constantly trying to find a way to fix it that I would like it so if you find that marinade again please share your source - I'd love to try it! And I'm coming right over for a piece of pie. :) blessings, marlene
ReplyDeleteChurn dash is one of my favorite patterns. It's hard to go wrong with that. And your picnic menu looks delicious and those pies... you're making my mouth water! I might have to bake one myself!
ReplyDeleteWow, so Bright and Pretty! Love the Summer look and all the delish food. Thanks for sharing your Perfect Picnic Quilt with us!
ReplyDeleteHuggs, Nancy
I love your picnic quilt! Funny that the bees love it, too. Is it the color or the food, I wonder. Every time we put yummy food, especially fruit, out on our backyard table the bees find us. Your flowers are beautiful and your food and pies look delicious. I am tempted to want a piece of each. Both of these pies look picture perfect to me. I have never tried this dressing. Now I am going to be looking for it, too. My hubby loves salmon. Thanks for sharing your picnic ... :) Pat
ReplyDeleteI love love your quilt and the colors you chose to make it in ! That is a favorite pattern of mine too ! Your pies are pretty as well....Pie and coffee at your house this afternoon ? hehe
ReplyDeleteOH, how I love pie. You have made me very hungry with your pictures. That is a very sweet quilt. I love the large blocks complemented with the small ones. The color does remind me off bees and the bees like it? I didn't know bees would be attracted to their own color, but it makes sense. Great post, Kris.
ReplyDeleteI also love peonies, we have soooo many in our big garden and it is always a pleasure when you see all the bees being so busy visiting one flower after the other:-)
ReplyDeleteYour pies really look very yummyyy, or should I better write : looked.... LOL
I love Churn dash blocks. What a great combo of sizes! Your picnic looks delicious! No wonder the bees wanted to be a part of it!
ReplyDeleteLove, your quilt. It is perfect! Your picnic food, yummy. Love your peonies too. WE have a few and even though they are short lived, so pretty. Thank you so much for being part of this "Perfect Picnic" hop. Great job.
ReplyDeleteKris, I am in love, love, love!......with your quilt, with orange, with rhubarb (even if it is with strawberries) pie AND with those orange stars...oh, and your flowers are gorgeous! I would imagine those pies look so pretty dished up, sitting on your beautiful quilt. Orange is my newest favorite color. I think I've purchased 10 half yard pieces this month!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is so cool! I love it! The peonies in your garden are stunning too!
ReplyDeleteI'm loving that school bus color. In civil war quilts it is called cheddar. It's a color not used often and can't figure out why. Your quilt is nice and bright and perfect for a picnic. The mini blocks are sweet. Speaking of sweet.... I have to stop now and fix dinner so I can have a slice of leftover pie. Your pies look scrumptious!
ReplyDeleteYour yellow churn dash is just cute as a button. The bees just wanted a bite of your yummy pies. Thanks for sharing your picnic with us.
ReplyDeleteOh, you can never go wrong with the Churn dachshund block. It turned out beautiful. The samon, looked scrumptious. Oh, and I would love a piece of Peach pie. Oh does that look good!
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous quilt! (It would match perfectly with the color of my Jeep!)
ReplyDeleteOh, and the pies look delicious!!!
ReplyDeleteSimple block but the color and the large blocks make for a great looking quilt. Glad you had fun on your picnic. Menu looks yummy.
ReplyDeleteI can almost smell the perfume of those peonies. We don't have them down in Alabama that I know of so they must not be native to the state or good in our red clay soil. The quilt is wonderful! Sort of matches the salmon and the poppies. The marinade sounds good too so I hope you find a source for it---or maybe locate a similar recipe that you can make up yourself?? If I were there I think I would have to have a bite of both pies--just a taste. Peach pies I can do but we don't have rhubarb down here either and being from the North, I really miss it!
ReplyDeleteLove the bright school bus yellow and white together. Very cheerful. My peonies are just starting to bloom ( Ontario, Canada). Your strawberry/rhubarb pie is making me hungry!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness.....your food looks so good! Love the quilt.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice picnic! I love poppies and yours are so beautiful! A lovely quilt, a lovely picnic.
ReplyDeleteLove your quilt with the large and small blocks! Perfect for a picnic!
ReplyDeleteI understand why the bees like your quilt - so do I. Churn dash is one of my favorite blocks. The menu sounds great! A choice of TWO pies...can I just have a small one of each variety? :)
ReplyDeleteThe pies look yummy. That's a great design for a picnic quilt. Your yard is lovely!
ReplyDeleteEverything looks so wonderful and delicious, Kris!! Love the pies, now I am craving peach pie :)
ReplyDelete-Soma
Your picnic quilt is gorgeous I love the churn dash block and your bright and sunny one is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThe bees were enjoying our Cola on our picnic, we got lucky as well, no stings. :) We don't make much fish, but I'll have to keep an eye out for a similar dressing like you used since my husband really enjoys fish. Thanks for sharing your ideas!

Love your quilt. I've always loved the look of the churndash pattern. I have never made one but it's on my list to do.
ReplyDeleteKris! I wanted to tell you I went to Safeway and found a Sweet Citrus Herb dressing (Safeway Select brand) and my husband used it on both chicken and some Swai fish fillets and said it was delightful! (Honestly his words lol) So thank you for the inspiration to use such a product in such a way, and maybe it can be a decent substitute for your marinade!
